Fall 2023 Semester Classes

Below is a breakdown of the classes we offered.

MORNING SESSION

All-Morning Classes, 9:00 am - 11:50 am

Nursery$0

We have a nursery available for infants-2 years old who have older siblings in the co-op. The nursery will have at least 2 adults in it at all times. There is no charge for the nursery; however, you will be responsible for providing all snacks, drinks, diapers, etc. for your child.

Preschool - $15

Available for 3 and 4 year old children who have older siblings in the co-op. There will be a variety of subjects covered through hands on learning and play. This class is a courtesy class for our younger children and is a supplement to anything they are learning at home with you. One class period will also be used for a snack/recess time. You will be responsible for all drinks and snacks for your child.

Kindergarten - $20

Students will stay in one classroom for the entire morning and will have some form of mathematics and reading, as well as other areas of learning. This class is a supplement to what your child is learning at home with you. One class period will also be used for a snack/recess time. You will be responsible for providing all snacks and drinks for your child.

1st Grade - $20

Students will stay in one classroom for the entire morning and will learn the basics for language, math, and science through science experiments and other hands on learning techniques. One class period will also be used for a snack/recess time. You will be responsible for providing all snacks and drinks for your child.

1st Period Classes, 9:00 am - 9:50 am

Motion and Simple Machines, 2nd-3rd grades - $10

The Motion and Simple Machines course is filled with hands-on activities! Students will learn about motion and force, gravity, pulleys, levers, and so much more in this one-of-a-kind unit study. See Newton’s laws put into action and document the ways machines make our lives easier.

Nature Studies, 2nd-3rd grades - $15

A fun, interactive Charlotte Mason approach to studying nature.

PE, 2nd-3rd grades - $5

P.E. Class will consist of fun exercise games. We will teach kids good exercise habits while having fun as well as how to exhibit good sportsmanship. Dodgeball, jump rope, soccer, basketball and kickball are just some of the many activities we will be doing for the kids.

Cooking, 4th-5th grades - $40

Join us this semester for food and fun! Learn cooking basics, how to make easy/fun recipes and explore the world of food.

Intro to Sign Language, 4th-5th grades - $8

People often talk with their hands, so why not make the most of it? Imagine talking with a friend who is seated on the other side of a basketball court! Sign language is a fun and practical skill to learn. Join this class as we learn some of the basics in ASL (American Sign Language).

Texas History, 4th-5th grades - $15

It's important to learn about the state you live in. This class will cover all the things your little Texan needs to know about their home state. We'll cover state symbols, early Texans, Spanish influence, the Texas Revolution, and the true meaning of "Six flags Over Texas".

Chess, 6th-12th grades - $15

This will be a fun filled semester of learning the fundamentals of how to play chess, different terminology, and how to strategize different tactics. Each child will have their own chess set to keep at the end of the semester. If your child already has a set, then let us know after registering so we can work out a reimbursement.

Study Hall, 6th-12th grades - $0

Study Hall is for middle/high schoolers who need to do homework, study, or other busy work in a quiet environment. Each student must have busy work to do the entire class period.

2nd Period Classes, 10:00 am - 10:50 am

Choir, 2nd-3rd grades - $15

Choir class will consist of singing, learning to find the rhythm, and singing in harmony with each other. Class will also involve creative dancing and fun instruments they can move and play with. My goal is to have fun and have the kids learn and find their voice. Expression for ourselves and for the Lord can come in so many creative ways. I hope to create a path for them on their journey of life! I’m creating a mash up of songs that should be fun and challenging, but within reach for their age and abilities. We will be shooting to perform our efforts at the end of the semester so they can have a little fun!

Me on the Map (Social Studies and Geography), 2nd-3rd grades - $10

"Me On the Map" is a great introduction to Social Studies/Geography by giving students an overall picture of how they fit into the larger world. They will learn all about their home, street, city, state, country, continent, and planet. We will use picture books, hands-on games, art projects, crafts, songs, recipes and more to explore the world around us.

STEM, 2nd-3rd grades - $8

STEM education is a unique method of hands-on learning where students can learn to apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematical content by solving real-world problems with innovative design-based thinking to prepare students for future career opportunities.

Grammar and Literature, 4th-5th grades - $5

In this course students will study a variety of works of children’s literature and the foundational elements of grammar. Students will read a wide selection of great books in order to gain a taste for quality reading materials that delight as well as instruct, expand their vocabulary breadth, learn the basic components of a story, develop greater comprehension and analysis skills, and discover universal truths in literature. In the grammar component of this course, students will gain command of the eight parts of speech. The instructor will also incorporate dictation as well as some memory work into the curriculum. You will need to provide your own copy of the following books for this semester: • Rudyard Kipling, Just So Stories • E.B. White, Charlotte’s Web • Hans Christian Andersen, Fairy Tales • C.S. Lewis, The Chronicles of Narnia • George MacDonald, The Princess and Curdie • Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol • Select poems

PE, 4th-5th grades - $5

P.E. Class will consist of fun exercising games. We will teach kids good exercise habits while having fun. Dodgeball, jump rope, soccer and kickball are just some of the many activities we will be doing for the kids. Boys and girls are welcome to join.

Picture Books and Illustrations, 4th-5th grades - $10

Picture books are the best. Let’s combine picture book read-alouds and art to make our own illustrations to tell short stories. After we read aloud our favorite picture books of the week, we will study the unique writing styles of the author and the amazing artwork of the illustrator. We will then use these examples to inspire our own illustrations and creative writing. This class will have a heavy focus on art as we draw, paint, collage, and more to tell our own fun and original stories.

Art, 6th-8th grades - $25

Come join us as we explore Famous artists in time. Each week we will learn about an artist and do a corresponding project.

Yearbook, 6th-12th grades - $5

This class will co-create a photo yearbook for the co-op. Students may also get a brief overview of photography so they can take better photos. This class will help develop skills in photo composition, page layout, and design. Students will also develop their abilities to work as a team as they produce the yearbook. Personal cameras are not needed to take the class.

Study Hall, 6th-12th grades - $0

Study Hall is for middle/high schoolers who need to do homework, study, or other busy work in a quiet environment. Each student must have busy work to do the entire class period.

3rd Period Classes, 11:00 am - 11:50 am

Art, 2nd-3rd grades - $20

This semester's art class will focus on the foundation of your little artist's craft. We will learn about the color wheel, how colors interact with each other, and the basics of art such as shading, getting our imagination out onto the paper, and having fun while doing it! I will focus on helping your little artists bloom as they become more confident in their art skills. I plan on having a neurotrophic art unit, a tie dye day, a paper mâché project, and lots of other fun projects in between.

Math Games, 2nd-3rd grades - $10

We will be reviewing addition and subtraction with regrouping, telling time, recognizing/counting money, fractions, multiplication, division, place value, even/odd, counting by 2,3,5,10. We will move around the room a lot as we work, review, and play in groups with math games.

Me on the Map (Social Studies and Geography), 2nd-3rd grades - $10

Meteorology, 4th-5th grades - $10

Students will learn the basics of weather such as types of clouds, forms of precipitation, and forecasting tools. This class will be a combination of art and science experiments. The end of year project for this class will have students designing their own weather forecast.

Rhythm and Booms, 4th-5th grades - $15

Come ready to whack, smack, shake, and make music! This class will focus on learning musical rhythm using boomwhackers, bells, shakers, and sticks, with the intent to encourage your children to find various ways of praising our Lord in all that they do.

Drama, 6th-8th grades - $10

This class will be focusing on activities, short scene performances, and improv games to help students build self-confidence as they learn drama and speech skills. These acting exercises focus on stage movement, using props, showing emotion through facial expression, movement with music, and speaking in front of an audience. Our goal is to develop effective oral expression and stage presence, as well as learning fundamental theater-related terms and concepts. **There may be one or two short monologues or dialogues they will be expected to memorize toward the end of the semester.

Historical Conquest, 6th-12th grades - $8*

Historical Conquest is a unique and exciting card game in which players create personalized societies of REAL heroes, villains, leaders, assassins, disasters, armies, and more from ACTUAL world history and battle them against one another. Each card is complete with fantastic illustrations and intriguing summaries of people, places, and events from world history. Students will learn history in a more fun and engaging way. A playing mat and a starter deck of playing cards are required for this class. *Additional fees, depending on what your student needs, will be charged after your student is registered for this class.

Study Hall, 6th-12th grades - $0

Study Hall is for middle/high schoolers who need to do homework, study, or other busy work in a quiet environment. Each student must have busy work to do the entire class period.

AFTERNOON SESSION

All-Afternoon Classes, 1:00 pm - 3:50 pm

Nursery, Preschool, Kindergarten, and 1st Grade - $0

These classes will not have any formal teaching and are available free of charge for children with older siblings in the co-op who are attending the Afternoon Session. However, you will be responsible for providing all snacks, drinks, diapers, etc. for your children.

1st Period Classes, 1:00 pm - 1:50 pm

(2nd-8th Grades)

Kids Cooking Around the World, 2nd-5th grades - $30

Students will learn to make recipes from different countries, which will include some geography lessons with each class. We will learn basic food safety, how to follow recipes, as well as mixing and baking.

Games, 2nd-5th grades - $15

60 Seconds and BOOM! Each week, the kids will work together or compete in a series of challenges, testing their problem solving skills and teamwork abilities.

Beginning Guitar, 6th-8th grades - $25

Students who “pick” this class will learn to put the “strum” in “instrument.” This class is for students who have little or no experience playing guitar. The class will be working in one “A-chord” on a somewhat small “scale” as no more than 10 students will be in the class. Each student will need their own acoustic guitar.

Chess, 6th-8th grades - $15

This will be a fun filled semester of learning the fundamentals of how to play chess, different terminology, and how to strategize different tactics. Each child will have their own chess set to keep at the end of the semester. If your child already has a set, then let us know after registering so we can work out a reimbursement.

PE, 6th-8th grades - $5

Let's get moving! The kids will get a chance to lead the class in stretches each week. We will spend as much time in the fresh air as the weather allows. We will focus on movement with fun activities like dribble tag, dodgeball, four square, capture the flag and much more. Additionally, the kids will get an opportunity to contribute ideas for activities and vote on them.

2nd Period Classes, 2:00 pm - 2:50 pm

(2nd-8th Grades)

Games, 2nd-5th grades - $15

60 Seconds and BOOM! Each week, the kids will work together or compete in a series of challenges, testing their problem solving skills and teamwork abilities.

PE, 2nd-5th grades - $5

We will be playing games like rock paper scissors, bean bag balance, wheelbarrow races, movement dice, and many more. Students will need to come to class ready to play wearing appropriate attire and footwear.

Arts and Crafts, 6th-8th grades - $40

This class will be a combination of projects from paper mâché, mod podge paper on wood, painting, wood staining and finishing things like small wood boxes, jewelry making and possible floral design. This will be more of a craft class than actual art lessons, though they will learn the “how-to” of each project.

Escape Room Games, 6th-8th grades - $0

We will be using several escape game kits from beginner to challenging. Kids will work in teams of 4 to solve puzzles and collect clues to see if they can “escape” the scenario before the end of the class period. They will complete a different scenario each week. NOTE: there are some games that include topics such as haunted houses and murder mysteries, but the games are geared for ages 10 and up, so none of the cards or pieces are actually scary or gory.

Homesteading, 6th-8th grades - $40

If you sometimes dream of a simpler, more natural life that brings purpose and meaning, “Homesteading” is the class for you! This class will bring you back to your roots and give you the skills needed to be self-sufficient. This class grew out of a love for practical skills and the desire to share them with others in a society that has basically abandoned the idea of a self-sustaining environment. In this class, you will learn a number of skills, including: ⁃ Animal Husbandry ⁃ Gardening ⁃ Learning About Bees ⁃ Making Soap ⁃ Making Natural Herbal Remedies ⁃ And All the In-Between! In our Animal Husbandry section, you will learn to raise animals for meat, fiber, milk, eggs, etc. Please note we will be processing chickens for meat. Each student will also have the opportunity to take a chicken home to cook.

3rd Period Classes, 3:00 pm - 3:50 pm

(2nd-8th Grades)

Art Around the World, 2nd-5th grades - $18

Come learn about a new country each week and complete an art project based on traditions of that country.

PE, 2nd-5th grades - $5

Astronomy, 6th-8th grades - $15

Students will learn a wide array of subjects related to our universe. Learning topics include the solar system, life cycle of a star, black holes, human exploration of space, the International Space Station, and more. They will participate in astronomy experiments, give presentations, and explore astrophotography.

Intro to Psychology via Gather Round Curriculum, 6th-8th grades - $30

Gather Round is a unit based approach teaching directly from a Biblical Perspective. Why do we act the way we do? Why are some days difficult and others a breeze? What can we do to positively affect our days and lives regardless of how well or poorly it goes? This unit covers these questions and so many more. We’ll explore solid, action based answers to improve your outlook/moods now and in the future! Class price includes a workbook for each student packed with applicable scriptures, stunning illustrations, in depth examples for life, and historical, evidence based science behind the Psychology we’ll be reviewing.

Narnia Literature Unit, 6th-8th grades - $10

Students will read 1-2 chapters a day and complete simple worksheets at home and as we go through the books. Class time will be spent discussing the chapters they have read at home, answering comprehension questions, applying Bible passages and principles, eating related foods, and other activities. PLEASE NOTE: you will need to provide your own copies of these 4 books in the Narnia series: • The Magician’s Nephew The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe • The Horse and His Boy The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

 

1st Period Classes, 1:00 pm - 2:20 pm

(9th-12th Grades)

Anatomy and Physiology, 9th-12th grades$50

This class will cover cardiopulmonary, histology, integumentary, digestive, nervous, endocrine, lymphatic, muscular, skeletal, and reproductive systems. Classes will consist of several labs which include dissections. Students will be expected to log on to google classroom for multiple assignments throughout the weekdays.

Drama, 9th-12th grades$25

This class will be rehearsing a play that will be performed at the end of the semester party! Skills we will be focusing on include stage movement, using props, showing emotion through facial and body expression, and speaking in front of an audience. ​**THERE WILL BE REHEARSALS OUTSIDE OF CLASS. I will do my best to keep these to an hour a week, but as we get closer to production, there will be a few that could extend to 3 to 4 hours in length as they practice in full costume with props, sound, and lighting changes. If we need props and costumes, I will always try to borrow items before making purchases to save everyone money. **If your child has never been in drama class or in a play, please contact stepupcoop@gmail.com prior to signing up. While drama is an amazing way to help students become more confident and "come out of their shell", this particular class is a bit much for beginners or those who are shy. I never want to push a child past their comfort zone and this is meant to be a fun and not intimidating!

Photography and Yearbook, 9th-12th grades$5

This class will co-create a photo yearbook for the co-op as well as learning about photography. For the yearbook portion, students will develop skills in photo composition, page layout, and design. Students will also develop their abilities to work as a team as they produce the yearbook. For photography we will go over the exposure triangle: ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed as well as a few other things like point of view, depth of field, etc. Bringing your own camera is preferred so you can learn how to use it better, but a personal camera is not required. If your child is bringing their own camera please let us know what it is when you register.

Spanish 1A, 9th-12th grades$10

The United States has the second-highest population of Spanish speakers in the world. In this Introduction to Spanish class, we will build vocabulary, learn verb conjugation, and practice speaking and writing. This class is for all beginners and is a pre-requisite for taking Spanish 1B in the spring semester.

2nd Period Classes, 2:30 pm - 3:50 pm

(9th-12th Grades)

Beginning Guitar, 9th-12th grades$25

Hair, Skin, and Nails, 9th-12th grades$45

We will be going over the do's and don'ts of hair, skin and nail care. Also we will be learning more about different haircuts and color services.

Movies as Literature, 9th-12th grades$40

This is a year long class and each semester can be counted as 1/2 high school English credit. "Good movies tell good stories, and good storytelling requires the use of traditionally respected literary devices and techniques. With a little help from a study guide, many movies introduce the viewer to excellent literature that is being presented in a visual medium,” which is accessible and enjoyable for many, whether they’re avid readers or struggle with reading high school novels. Parents will be responsible for obtaining specific movies (whether by DVD, rental, or streaming service) for their student to watch at home two to four times over a period of about two weeks. Students will watch the designated movie at home, answer the questions to prepare for in class discussion of the literary device(s) of focus, and write an essay from a choice of prompts. Parents should plan for a maximum of 75 minutes per day, 5 days per week of work outside of the co-op class. Total time will depend on how many times your child watches the movie and their grasp of literary analysis. Quizzes for vocabulary, study guides, and essays will be completed at home and turned in using Google Classroom, so students will need access to a computer and the internet. Physical Science with Labs, 9th-12th grades$40

This high school physical science course will take you on an amazing journey. The first semester will begin with a detailed discussion of the world around you covering earth science topics of air, atmosphere, water, hydrosphere, Earth's lithosphere, and weather. The second semester will will take you out into the universe so you can learn the majesty of God's creation, focusing on an introduction to physics topics including the physics of motion, Newton's laws, gravitational force, electricity and magnetism, waves and sound, light and astrophysics. No prerequisites are required. During co-op, students will perform weekly labs and activities as well as have teacher instruction. At home, students will be expected to devote 2-4 hours a week outside of co-op reading, completing study guides, writing lab reports and taking tests. At-home assignments and supplemental materials will be posted on Google classroom so your student will need access to a computer and the internet.
